As many of you are now aware, things just are not as we would hope them to be on campus. Shaw University appears to be faced yet again with some serious challenges that could place her future in jeopardy. So, instead of pointing fingers prematurely at those who may be responsible for this troubling set of circumstances, a new generation of Shaw Alumni as well as others have emerged with a different approach to addressing the many challenges we will all face in the weeks, months, and years to come.

We are the Friends of Shaw University – Bright Enlightened Alumni Revolutionized for Shaw…”BEARS”. We attempted to organize the Friends of Shaw in 2008 as an alumni chapter with the stated purpose of bringing about real change. As Shaw University’s only “Cyber” alumni chapter, it was our hope to build a coalition broad enough to overcome any challenges the University may face going forward.  Unfortunately, we were faced with aggressive opposition and were forced to disband.

Because of our love for Shaw, we refuse to surrender and have recently decided to relaunch as an ‘unofficial’ alumni chapter. The mission of the Friends of Shaw University is to encourage and promote involvement of Alumni by: meeting their needs for Alumni services; creating opportunities for participation in the life of the University; and, developing and disseminating information that communicates the academic excellence of Shaw University.

Our primary objective is to build a coalition that will not breed mistrust nor any form of skepticism. What this simply means is that we will operate with a level of transparency that has not been commonly associated with the real affairs facing our institution. While it certainly is no guarantee that we will always have the correct answers, we will indeed provide an avenue for viable suggestions unmatched by any other chapter. Gone are the days that we will only be solicited after-the-fact to contribute to the many economic challenges faced by Shaw without fully being apprised of what got us to that point in the first place. As our numbers continue to increase we will serve notice on those currently entrusted with the institution’s future that we too demand to be heard. Also, please keep in mind that you do not have to be a graduate of Shaw to be a “friend of Shaw U” – you simply have to hold Shaw dear to your heart. IT DOES NOT COST ANYTHING TO JOIN.

 

Now is the time for us to take charge and deal with the real issues facing our Shaw University.  Again, keep in mind that we cannot wait to see what “others” are “planning” to do. At this time of crisis many of us are extremely concerned with what we are hearing about Shaw. It is time for us to take charge.
